The theme of ‘love and elopement’ has often served as a favoured plot device in Malayalam cinema. In the past, elopement used to be a crucial aspect of romantic films, as the audience preferred witnessing onscreen lovers overcoming obstacles in their path to eventually unite. Filmmakers have explored this theme through both comical and serious dramas. The latest in this genre is Journey of Love 18+. Directed by Arun D Jose, the movie features Naslen K Gafoor, Mathew Thomas and Nikhila Vimal in lead roles. It will be available for streaming on SonyLIV from September 15 . Released in 1997, the movie was a blockbuster hit, with many youngsters trying to emulate the fashion statement popularised by Kunchacko.

2. Annayum Rasoolum: Disney+Hotstar

In the 2013 Rajeev Ravi film, Annayum Rasoolum two individuals from different religions fall in love and face societal repercussions. Fahadh Faasil plays Rasool, who falls for Anna (Andrea Jeremiah), a sales girl and the sole breadwinner of her family. The inter-caste romance drama stands out as a memorable drama, thanks to its innovative methods of filmmaking and some remarkable performances by the cast. The cinematography is particularly impressive, capturing the essence of real-life Kochi and its raw characters.

3. Ellam Sheriyakum: ZEE 5

Starring Asif Ali and Rajisha Vijayan, Ellam Sheriyakum is a heartwarming family drama with a political theme. Released in 2021, the film tells the story of a young couple who get married after eloping. Rajisha plays Ancy, the chief minister’s daughter. She runs away with Vineeth (played by Asif), who belongs to a rival political party member’s family. The movie is set in the northern region of Kerala and aims to portray the contemporary political climate in the state.

4. Thrishanku: Netflix

Released earlier this year, Thrishanku is a comedy movie directed by Achyuth Vinayak. The film is a delightful comedy that captures the confusion of young people, while also evoking the spirit of classic Malayalam comedies.

5. Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam: Sony LIV

Senna Hegde’s Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam (2021) is one of the best satirical comedies ever made in Malayalam. The movie’s natural humour and well-written script make it a must-watch. The story revolves around the events of a single day before a wedding, where the bride intends to run away with her lover. Without being preachy, the film humorously addresses the patriarchal system that still exists within families.
