Vishnupriya: Directed by VK Prakash, Vishnupriya, is an intense romantic drama set in the 90s, which has a delayed release, but it is finally headed to theatres
It’s been a few years since Shreyas K Manju’s Vishnupriya has been ready for release. The film, a 90s intense love story directed by VK Prakash, was meant to be Shreyas’ follow up to his debut Paddehuli and present him in a very different avatar. It was also meant to draw on the popularity of Priya Prakash Varrier, who had, back then, risen to prominence after her viral wink from her debut Malayalam film. The film was set for release in 2023 and 2024, but kept getting pushed ahead, until now.
On January 16, the team of Vishnupriya came together to launch a new song from the film and finally announce when it would be in theatres. Roaring Star Sriimurali was the guest of honour at the event and revealed that Vishnupriya was headed to theatres on February 21. Speaking at the event, Shreyas, highlighted the contribution of director VK Prakash in making him a much better actor than he was before doing Vishnupriya.
“Vishnupriya, I would say, is a film that runs on performances; it’s a content-oriented tale, based on a true story,” said Shreyas, who thanked his father, producer K Manju profusely for backing a film that’s not the routine commercial fare he is used to. The actor added that when the story of Vishnupriya was brought to him, he was not keen to be a part of it, but after working on the film and having seen the final output, he couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved.

In an earlier conversation with OTTPlay, VK Prakash had also said that despite his vast filmography, Vishnupriya is a film that he is keenly looking forward to for audiences to see. Shreyas, who began his career with Paddehuli and had taken up another commercial film called Raana at the time, was better suited for a boy-next-door image, the filmmaker felt, and that’s what he’d done with Vishnupriya.
