Actor Vijay, who is the latest entrant to Tamil Nadu political scenario, has issued a statement, regarding his stance on the Centre-implemented Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and expressed his opposition to it. The statement was issued on the letterhead of his recently launched political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The CAA was passed by the Indian Parliament in 2019 and grants citizenship to the persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, such as Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Christians. The act was widely criticised for the divisive politics by BJP and its restriction to allow persecuted Muslims to be granted the same allowance.

What did Vijay say?

Actor Vijay who recently floated his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam issued the statement on his party letterhead, regarding CAA. The actor opposed the Centre’s move. “It is not acceptable to implement a law like Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 in a place where all the citizens exist and live in harmony," the statement in Tamil, when loosely translated read. He also urged the rulers of Tamil Nadu to oppose CAA and that it will not be implemented in the state.

The actor’s bold statement began to soon trend on social media, with fans and media pouring their reactions. While some hailed the actor’s bold statement, it also received a fair share of criticism on social media. Check out some of the reactions below.

What’s in for Vijay in future?

Actor Vijay is the newest addition to the plethora of Tamil actors who have plunged into state politics. The actor had previously said that he would do a couple of films before taking up full-time politics. On the acting front, actor Vijay is currently working in GOAT- Greatest of All Time with director Venkat Prabhu. The film is said to be VFX-heavy and is expected to have a festival release window. Vijay also said that he will be doing one more film, tentatively called Thalapathy 69. However, the director of the film has not yet been revealed yet.
