The film about the transport and media baron will open in theatres on December 9
A biopic about a Padma Shri winner from Karnataka is set to hit screens soon. The pan-India film Vijayanand, directed by Rishika Sharma, takes a close look at the rise of businessman Vijay Sankeshwar, who began his operations with one truck and grew it to a fleet of over 5,000 vehicles, making his VRL Logistics, one of the largest in the country. The transport business apart, Sankeshwar has also dabbled with publishing, launching the Kannada news daily Vijay Karnataka, which quickly became the leading newspaper in the state, followed by its English counterpart, Vijay Times. While he sold both Vijay Karnataka and Vijay Times to the Times of India group, his tryst with the media did not end, and he launched a TV channel Digvijay and the Kannada daily Vijayavani.
The film, which is slated to open in theatres on December 9, will focus on Sankeshwar’s transport and media businesses. Nihal Rajput plays Vijay Sankeshwar in the film, with Siri Prahlad in the role of his wife. The VRL empire is run by Vijay and his son Anand, so the film features the younger Sankeshwar too, with Brahmagantu fame Bharath Bopanna in the role. A Gopi Sundar musical, Vijayanand is the first film production venture for Anand Sankeshwar, under their banner VRL Film Productions. The film’s ensemble cast also includes Anant Nag, as BG Sankeshwar, Vijay’s father, V Ravichandran, Shine Shetty, Archana Kottige, among others. The filmmakers are confident that Vijayanand will work as a pan-India release, because even though it is about a businessman from Karnataka, his life will be an inspiration.
In fact, given the buzz surrounding the film, the makers have apparently already locked on its digital partner. Vijayanand, we hear, has been sold to Amazon Prime Video. Details on when to expect it on OTT are yet to be revealed.
