On Friday, the wife of late Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth, Premalatha, received the Padma Bhushan award from the hands of President Droupadi Murmu, on behalf of her husband. Vijayakanth, who died in December 2023, due to ill health, left a famed body of work that stands the test of time.
An actor-turned politician, Vijayakanth was fondly known as ‘Captain’ by his fans and fraternity members. Hailing from Madurai, he has appeared in over 100 films as a lead actor and was mostly known for his action sequences. Senthoora Poove released in 1988 and is a romantic action film starring Vijayakanth, Ramki, Nirosha, Chandrasekhar, Sripriya, CL Anandan, Vijaya Lalitha, Anandaraj, Senthil, and Charle among others. The film is about how a young girl who is tortured by her step-mother, and gets help from a man who assures to save her and her lover from the obstacles they are facing. Auto Raja is a 1982 film about a well-read man who earns a livelihood by driving auto-rickshaw. One day he falls in love with a girl, only to realise that she has multiple personality disorder. The film is directed by K Vijayan and also stars Jaishankar, Gayathri, and others. The film is a remake of the 1980 Kannada film starring Shankar Nag and Gayathri.
Oru Iniya Udhayam is directed by R Selvam and stars Vijayakanth and Amala in the lead roles. The film is a rural drama with Vijayakanth playing a ruffian who is employed by a man in order to complete a mission and teaches him martial arts. At the same time, the ruffian falls in love with a girl, only to realise that the mission is connected to his lady love, making him stand on crossroads.
