Veteran lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar to receive honorary doctorate from THIS international university

In lieu of his incomparable and unparalleled contribution in his field, the veteran lyricist-screenwriter Javed Akhtar will be now receiving an honorary doctorate from SOAS University of London. For the unversed, the university awards with honorary doctorates to those individuals who have made an exceptional contribution in the arena of scholarship or public life, and which is relevant to the mission of the university.

The extremely distinguished SOAS University of London will now be conferring upon the respectable Javed Akhtar a Doctor of Literature (DLit) (honoris causa) in lieu of his contribution as a lyricist, screenwriter, poet and activist to Indian cinema, according to a press release issued to the media. Upon knowing that he will be receiving an honorary doctorate from SOAS University of London, the veteran lyricist-screenwriter Javed Aktar said, in media statement that, “I am deeply honoured because the University of London is one of the most highly respected universities in the world and the citation makes me stand humbled”.

The tentative date chosen by SOAS University of London to hold the ceremony in order to confer a honorary doctorate (a Doctor of Literature (DLit) (honoris causa) on the veteran Javed Akhtar has been reported as 5, 6 or 7 of September this year.

For the unversed, let us tell you that, the era of the seventies and eighties were dominated by the story writer duo ‘Salim-Javed’. While Salim happens to be Salim Khan (father of Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan), Javed in the name happens to be that of Javed Akhtar. This super-duper partnership gave Bollywood and the cinegoers mega blockbuster films in the form of Hema Malini's 'Seeta Aur Geeta', Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'Deewar', 'Sholay', 'Zanjeer'…the list is almost endless.

After the creative partnership with Salim Khan ended, Javed Akhtar went onto pursue a career as a lyricist. As a lyricist, Javed Akhtar has been responsible for penning many a chartbuster song which will be evergreen in the memory of the music lovers and cinegoers. In his career spanning many years as a lyricist, there have been many national and international awards which have been conferred on him. These awards include the prestigious National Award, Filmfare Award and also the extremely prestigious Padma Vibushan and Padma Bhushan, which happens to be the highest civilian awards in the country.
