Vash, the Gujarati film that inspired the Ajay Devgn-led Hindi film Shaitaan, is finally coming to OTT, weeks after it was revealed the makers of the latter had deferred its streaming
The Gujarati supernatural horror thriller Vash, directed by Krishnadev Yagnik, which served as source material for the recent Hindi film Shaitaan, is coming to OTT. The film, which released in theatres in February 2023, would have been available to stream long ago, but for the intervention of the team of Shaitaan, who struck a deal with Shemaroo, which holds the rights, to push the date ahead until after the Hindi version’s theatrical run.
Now that Shaitaan’s theatrical run is coming to an end with only a handful of shows in certain cities, it is time for the original to come to OTT. According to a post by ShemarooMe, ‘The story that inspired a Bollywood blockbuster is coming to haunt you’. Experience the original thriller! Vash premieres on April 26.
In May last year it was reported that the makers of Shaitaan had negotiated a deal and got the team of Vash and Shemaroo to defer any streaming plans. As per this agreement, the original film was not even allowed to be on YouTube to prevent audiences from watching the original. Interestingly, the makers of last year’s Telugu film Salaar had employed a similar strategy, removing almost all copies of the Kannada original Ugramm from various platforms.
Vash, which stars Hitu Kanodia, Niilam Paanchal, Hiten Kumar, Janki Bodiwala and Aaryan Sanghvi, follows Atharva (Hitu), his wife Beena (Niilam) and their kids Aarya and Ansh (Janki and Aaryan), who encounter devastating supernatural occurrences after they meet a stranger called Pratap (Hiten), who initially offers to help them, but has a sinister plan in place for them.
The Hindi version had Ajay Devn in Hitu’s role, with Jyotika returning to Hindi cinema as his wife, while Janki Bodiwala reprised her role from the original. Unlike the original, which received fairly positive reviews, the Hindi adaptation opened to mixed response, but still managed to be a successful venture. Shaitaan will be available on Netflix when it begins streaming.
