Vineeth Sreenivasan presents a tale of two friends with filmi dreams and how one’s betrayal paves way for the downfall of the other.
One of the big Vishu releases in Kerala this year is a Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial, Varshangalkku Shesham, which, much like his filmography as an actor, steps away from the feel-good candy-floss genre, to a more intensely emotional heart-wrenching tale set a few decades ago. Vineeth’s primary characters are played by his brother Dhyan and superstar Mohanlal’s son Pranav, two friends with big dreams of striking big in the heart of cinema, Kodambakkam.
The trailer of Varshangalkku Shesham hints at a falling out between the pals, presumably because Murali (Pranav) walks away from their ‘joint’ dream and strikes out on his own, which leads to the downfall of the other, a place so deep and dark that there is no escape from. Or is there? Much of the trailer is about Dhyan, in a story that travels across different time spans and has the actor sporting different looks in keeping with his increasing age.
But more than just a few grey strands and a receding hairline, what stands out is how much of the trailer’s run-time is dedicated to establishing that Varshangalkku Shesham is a film that focuses squarely on Dhyan the actor and not the fun goofball one expects him to be. This is as intense as it can be and could easily be the big career break that Vineeth has orchestrated for his younger brother.
Much like the earlier teaser, the trailer also highlights just how much Pranav channels his superstar dad, which could be intentional here, but does not really allow the actor to show audiences much of himself. The actor is made to look and sound like a young Mohanlal that you forget that it is Pranav onscreen.

The rest of the film’s ensemble cast, including Aju Varghese, Kalyani Priyadarshan, Basil Joseph, have little to do in the trailer, which, one can only assume is not the case in the film. This is a trailer that is as good as a solo-show for Dhyan and boy does he sizzle! Varshangalkku Shesham will be in theatres on April 10. Also in theatres this Vishu are Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham and Unni Mukundan’s Jai Ganesh.
