Vijay in Varisu

The highest grosser of Kollywood in 2023 till date is Vijay-starrer Varisu which was released in theatres on January 11. The Vamshi Paidipally directorial was released in Telugu under the title Vaarasudu. The family drama, starring Rashmika Mandanna, Sarath Kumar, Jayasudha and Prakash Raj among others, is said to have grossed 300 crores worldwide.

The makers officially announced the same a couple of days ago, leaving fans of Vijay excited. What makes the success special for them is the fact that it surpassed Ajith's Thunivu by several crores, especially outside Tamil Nadu.

However, Trichy Sridhar, one of the leading exhibitors of Tamil Nadu, considers the figures announced by makers as a big joke. In a recent interaction with one of the film critics, the veteran said that the numbers are bloated, though he doesn't want to make a comment on the original figures.

He also added that Varisu has outsmarted Thunivu by around five to seven percent in terms of collection in Tamil Nadu, though the latter opened to comparatively bigger numbers on day one owing to extra theatres allocated for the action drama. According to him, both the movies put up only average numbers on the first three days, but he was surprised with the huge box office figures of the films from the fourth day.

Sridhar added that Red Giant Movies, which distributed Thunivu, removed the H Vinoth directorial from a few theatres as three films which they are presenting released recently. It isn't sure how the production house and makers of Varisu are going to react to his claims.

Meanwhile, we hear that Varisu is gearing up for its OTT release in two week's time. Amazon Prime Video has acquired the movie's digital rights.
