Malayalam movie Valatty: The Tale of Tails, which features real dogs with minimal use of animation, is all set to release on July 21. As per the makers, the film is the first-of-its-kind in Indian cinema with all its main characters being played by dogs.

The trailer and other updates, which the makers have been releasing are getting good response from the viewers, and the latest promo material is the film’s theme song that is rendered by Crishna. The animated video song features eleven dogs and a rooster.

Valatty had garnered significant attention, particularly for its unique feature of all characters being played by dogs. The central plot revolves around the romance between Tomy and Amalu, and their decision to elope after facing objections from their owners.

In the film, character of Tomy, the male lead is portrayed by a Golden Retriever, while the female lead and antagonist are played by a Cocker Spaniel and a Rottweiler, respectively. Additionally, the movie also includes a country dog who plays the role of hero’s friend. Although films featuring animals have been done by production houses like Disney, it is said that there has been no such initiative in India to date.

Vijay Babu, the film’s producer, said that its making has been an arduous task with the movie being in production for almost three and a half years.

The production team bought puppies of a particular size, colour and breed and trained them for the script. A dog park was created for conducting the training sessions and dedicated doctors and trainers were employed. Additionally, the dogs were taken to public spaces to familiarise with the crowds. The shooting of the film began before the pandemic and faced disruptions during lockdown.

The film also has actors like Roshan Mathew, Soubin Shahir, Ranjini Haridas, Sunny Wayne, Aju Varghese, and Indrans lending their voices to the animals.
