Vaani Kapoor is basking in the glory of the positive reviews her performance in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is bringing forth. Not only is the actress being lauded for her impeccable portrayal, but also for the brave way in which chose to break stereotypes by taking up the role. Kapoor recently opened up about how she felt her film could pave the way for more positive trans representation on screen.

In conversation with IANS, Kapoor talked about how she had been drawn to the film because of the script and how it told an important and inclusive story in such an engaging way, also crediting the efforts of director Abhishek Kapoor. The star talked about how such films had the potential to change the society as a whole towards a much more accepting attitude.

The actress hoped that her film would also pave the way for much better trans representation in the media, and also that in the future trans actors alone would play trans characters. She wished that the film was the last one where a cisgender, heterosexual actor played a transgender character.

Talking about what made her accept the role in the film, Kapoor said that the film had aimed to change people’s preconceived notions and how it was important to give people the freedom to choose their gender. She said that as an actor, she wanted to do good by being a part of such important films and did not think of herself as ‘brave for trying to do so.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui was released in theatres on December 10 and will be available to stream on Netflix, tentatively in January.
