UI, which marks Upendra’s return to direction after nearly a decade, will be in theatres on December 20
Upendra's UI is releasing in theatres on December 20
Real Star Upendra is counting down to the release of his latest directorial, UI, which hits theatres on December 20. Upendra has steadfastly refused to divulge much about his film, other than that it is set in a future he envisions in 2040, where people suffer from the outcome of inflation, global warming, caste politics and much more. In fact, Upendra has never once said that his film is called UI, and has left it to audiences to interpret.
UI: Real Star Upendra to release film with surprise twist for audiences?
As such, the filmmaker-actor does not want to talk about his interpretations of his film before its release. Instead, he’d rather that audiences watch the film and think about what he’s tried to say. “Audiences should think and decode the message in the film. The hope is that this will plant the seed of a thought for change in their minds. That is the intention behind making this film,” said Upendra, in a conversation with News18.
What he does say about the film is that every visual in it is metaphoric and open to interpretation. “If you look carefully, you will be able to decode it. The film hinges on its visual content, so you have to pay attention while watching,” he says, adding, “Usually, films are described as content-oriented. I have tried to do that with visuals.”
The entire film was shot on specially-crafted sets, as the filmmaker had to create a fictional world that will get audiences wondering if it is realistic or unrealistic world. The reason for the design of this world will be revealed in the end, he adds.
Plan to watch UI? Know Upendra the director with these films first
As he returns to the filmmaker’s chair with UI, Upendra says that he is aware that audiences today have great expectations, given the vast variety of content they are exposed to from across the globe. “Meeting this expectation or even exceeding it, is a task – a challenge we have to take on and hope to achieve,” he said.
