With the megastar open to doing films for OTTs too, it opens up another avenue for Mammootty to experiment as an actor
Mammootty ended 2022 as the reigning king of Mollywood box office, starring in superhits such as Bheeshma Parvam, Rorschach, CBI 5: The Brain and the critically acclaimed Puzhu, which marked his OTT debut. There seems to be no stopping the veteran actor, who has signed a bunch of interesting projects with young directors such as Deeno Dennis and Roby Varghese Raj, and veteran filmmakers including B Unnikrishnan and Ranjith, and that too in Malayalam as well as Telugu. Here’s a look at some of his much-awaited films that will be releasing in theatres and on OTTs this year:
Christopher
Mammootty plays a vigilante cop, who decides to take the law in his hands in B Unnikrishnan's big-budget investigative thriller, scripted by Udaykrishna. The movie also has Amala Paul, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sneha, Vinay Rai, Jinu Joseph and Dileesh Pothan. The film is expected to hit theatres in January 2023.
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam
Mammootty and Lijo Jose Pellissery's Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, which had its world premiere at the IFFK last year, is already one of the highly-awaited films featuring the megastar, with fans already hoping that the movie wins a major acting award this year. The film revolves around James, who is in a bus travelling from a Tamil Nadu to Kerala. He suddenly asks to halt the vehicle near the village and starts behaving like a Tamil man, who had disappeared from the place years ago.
Kaathal: The Core
The Great Indian Kitchen filmmaker Jeo Baby's latest family drama revolves around a couple, essayed by Mammootty and Jyothika, who will be marking her comeback to Malayalam after 13 years with the movie. The team has completed shooting the film, which is also produced by Mammootty Kampany. The film also has Lalu Alex, Muthumani, Chinnu Chandini and Sudhi Kozhikode as part of the cast.
Mammootty-Roby Varghese Raj's untitled film
Scripted by actor Dr Rony David Raj and Muhammed Shafi, the thriller will have Mammootty essaying the role of a police officer again. The yet-to-be-titled movie, which marks cinematographer Roby Varghese Raj's directorial debut, kicked off its shoot on December 27, 2022, with the megastar joining the sets in Pala on January 1, 2023. The film, which is produced by Mammootty Kampany, also has Deepak Parambol, Vijayaraghavan, Shabareesh Varma and Azees Nedumangad as part of the cast.
Agent
Mammootty had shot for Surrender Reddy’s pan-Indian action-thriller Agent in Europe and Hyderabad. The movie, which has Akhil Akkineni in the lead, has Mammootty playing an army officer nicknamed Devil. Contrary to rumours, the makers had revealed that Mammootty will be playing a full-length role in the movie, which marks his comeback to Telugu after Yatra in 2019.
Untitled Deeno Dennis directorial
Mammootty will team up veteran writer Kaloor Dennis' son Deeno for the latter's directorial debut later this year. The movie, which is touted to be a 'mass' thriller, is set to be a made on a big scale and will be shot in Bengaluru, Kochi and other locations in the South.
Kadugannawa Oru Yatra
Mammootty and director Ranjith have collaborated again for a segment in Netflix's anthology based on MT Vasudevan Nair's stories. The short film, based on MT's memoir during his trip to Sri Lanka, will have the megastar essay the role of a journalist who goes in search of a woman he had met during his childhood. The segment was shot in Sri Lanka and Palakkad.
