Mollywood actor-producer Unni Mukundan took his social media page late on Sunday night to make an earnest plea to the audience, urging them to watch his latest film Meppadiyan in theatres rather than resorting to pirated versions online.

The film, which is directed by debutant Vishnu Mohan, marks Unni’s debut production venture and was released in theatres on January 14. “Meppadiyan is a dream for which we have struggled for four years. In the midst of this pandemic crisis when many had withdrawn their movies from theatres, we had promoted it in every way we can and released it in theatres,” wrote the actor.

The actor then wrote that he has been hearing reports that a lot of people are watching its pirated version in their homes. “There might be those who can’t come to the theatre due to COVID-19, but isn’t there something called morals and ethics?” he asks, adding that it’s not a good tendency to watch pirated copies of a movie that is still running in theatres.

Unni also goes on to point out that the theatres are currently running only at 50% occupancy and that Meppadiyan had been made on a big budget. “No matter how many times we talk against piracy, we see that our society never takes it seriously,” said the actor, urging people to watch the movie in cinema halls.

Meppadiyan revolves around a series of incidents that happen in the life of a youth named Jayakrishnan, after he and an acquaintance decide to buy a piece of land. The movie, scripted and directed by Vishnu, also has Anju Kurian, Aju Varghese, Major Ravi, Saiju Kurup, Shanker Ramakrishnan and Kottayam Ramesh in pivotal roles. The family drama is inspired by true events and was shot during the pandemic in 2020.
