Upendra the filmmaker – that’s something that Kannada audiences look forward. It’s been a while since he last donned the director’s hat, so there’s a lot of intrigue about what the maverick filmmaker could be bringing to the table this time around. He’s been very guarded, choosing to do a teaser with no visuals and audio only at first, leaving it to the imagination of audiences, followed by a second teaser that hinted at his film being set in a dystopian future.

There’s war, people imprisoned, hunger and more, amid which, Upendra’s mysterious figure appears. Who and what is he? There are a lot of questions that audiences have at this point and they’ve been waiting patiently for word on when UI will be in theatres. The film has been ready for a while, and the makers have been trying to figure out a date to bring it to theatres. At one point, it was thought that the Real Star would treat fans to the film as his birthday gift to them, but September’s long gone and there’s been no word about UI.

When is Upendra's UI expected in theatres?

It is said that producer KP Sreekanth was waiting to hear about the release dates of Shivarajkumar’s Bhairathi Ranagal and Kiccha Sudeep’s Max to zero in on a good date for his film. In fact, the buzz in industry circles was that he and Upendra were contemplating an October 31 outing, since Bhairathi Ranagal was pushed to November 15 and Max is yet to announce its release. But then, out of the blue, Hombale Films swooped in and booked the Deepavali slot for its Sriimurali-led actioner, Bagheera.

On October 14, the makers of UI have promised an update and netizens hope that it is the release date and not an announcement about the announcement of the release date. There are murmurs that a December outing is likely, but it is also likely that the film gets pushed to early 2025. Hopefully we will know on Monday.
