Trailer release: Dharmatic Entertainment’s Ma Anand Sheela documentary to premiere on Netflix on April 22

Ma Anand Sheela from ‘Wild Wild Country’, the secretary of Osho and ex-convict, is getting her own documentary on Netflix titled Searching for Sheela. The documentary will hit Netflix on April 22.

Ma Anand Sheela is no stranger to the world of controversy - from her roots in Rajneeshpuram to her role in Netflix’s Wild Wild Country that traced the life of Osho. Now, her life will be the centre of the plot of Dharmatic Entertainment’s documentary Searching For Sheela which will be released on April 22 on Netflix.

The trailer for Searching For Sheela which was released on April 12 and has already received positive response, provided a glimpse into the life of Ma Anand Sheela, the spokesperson of the Osho movement in the ‘80s and the secretary of Bhagwan Shree ‘Osho’ Rajneesh. The documentary will follow her return to India after several decades and her subsequent interactions with the media. Additionally, the documentary will also feature her journey in the US where she pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault for her role in the 1984 Rajneeshee bioterror attack in Oregon.

A crucial figure in establishing the utopian town of Rajneeshpuram in Oregon, Ma Anand Sheela fled to Europe as a fugitive. She was accused of arson, wiretapping, attempted murder, and mass poisonings. Sentenced to 20 years in prison and serving 39 months before getting parole, Ma Anand Sheela will retell her evolution since her imprisonment in the documentary.

Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital content art of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, released the trailer for Searching For Sheela on April 12.  Karan Johar took to Instagram to announce the release of the trailer.

In an interview with IndiaTV, Ma Anand Sheela (now Sheela Birnstiel) shared that the documentary will give the audiences a glimpse of her real self, her identity, her life and its evolution in the last 40 years. The documentary is about Ma Anand Sheela’s journey back to India.

Calling the documentary an in-depth understanding of Sheela, filmmaker Shakun Batra stated that it will follow her grappling with society’s expectations from an ex-convict and her trying to reinvent public opinion about her.

Searching For Sheela will be available for streaming on Netflix from April 22.
