Tovino Thomas-starrer Minnal Murali's release date confirmed, superhero film to be a Christmas release

Amid much speculation about the release date of Minnal Murali, Netflix has now officially confirmed that the superhero movie, starring Tovino Thomas and directed by Basil Joseph, will release on Christmas eve on December 24.

The makers of the movie had transferred the final copy of the big budget superhero flick to the streamer earlier this month. Minnal Murali is touted to be a landmark film for the Malayalam film industry. While the team had initially planned it to be a theatrical release for Onam 2020, the pandemic and subsequent shutdown of theatres prompted them to consider for a direct-to-OTT release.

Minnal Murali will be releasing in over 190 countries in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada and English. The film marks the second collaboration of Tovino Thomas and Basil Joseph after their superhit film Godha, which also had Wamiqa Gabbi.

The upcoming movie, which is set in the 90s, has Tovino playing Jason, who acquires superpowers after being struck by lightning. The movie also has Guru Somasundaram, Harisree Ashokan and Femina George as part of the cast.

According to sources from the film’s team, Minnal Murali is planned as a franchise with the first movie serving as a superhero origin story. The movie also boasts a stellar technical team with Samir Thahir handling its cinematography, Vlad Rimburg directing the action sequences, Shaan Rahman composing its songs and Sushin Shyam scoring its BGM.

The team had begun the shoot of the film, produced by Weekend Blockbusters, in December 2019 and had wrapped it earlier this year, shooting for about 110 days in total across Kerala and Karnataka. Minnal Murali has also reportedly clinched the highest deal for a Malayalam film to release directly on Netflix.
