The movie also features Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Monica Barbaro.
Tom Cruise returns as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to his iconic 1986 action thriller drama Top Gun. Set to release as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, the box office predictions of Top Gun: Maverick suggests it will become the actor’s biggest opening.
According to Deadline, Top Gun: Maverick is expected to mint $180 million worldwide and at least $92M-$100M+ domestic during its extended four-day Memorial Day weekend opening. Both these numbers would become a record in Tom Cruise’s career.
Some reports even suggest that the movie could open closer to the vicinity of $125 million, which would make it almost double of Tom Cruise’s current highest, Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, which debuted at $64.8 million domestically in 2005.
In terms of international opening, Cruise’s The Mummy which came out in 2017 made $172.3 million, but ended up being a disaster in terms of reviews. Top Gun: Maverick premiered at CinemaCon earlier this year and some of the first reviews for the movie even suggests that it is superior to the original.
While Cruise returns as Maverick, a test pilot with an edge, Val Kilmer returns as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, his former rival. The movie sees Maverick training a new generation of fighter pilots after 36 years of the original film, among which is the son of his late best friend and RIO (Radar Intercept Officer), Goose.
Apart from Cruise and Kilmer, the movie also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. The highly-anticipated high-octane thriller is set to hit theatres in India on May 26.
