Todd Phillips has now shared an update regarding the sequel to 2019’s Joker.
Joker hit theatres around the world in 2019 and was a big hit with the fans, regardless of its critical success. The movie went on to be a statement with the fans, who took the movie to heart. Talks about a sequel with Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck were echoed since then, and now director Todd Phillips has shared a hint about Joker 2.
The director took to Instagram to share the cover of the script for the new film as well as star Joaquin Phoenix reading the current draft of the screenplay. Rumours about Phillips getting close to closing the deal on a sequel were widespread recently. Phillips’ reveal also confirms the return of writer Scott Silver, who co-wrote the original film with him.
The cover of the draft also reads "Folie à Deux", which roughly translates to "madness for two" and is a mental disorder affecting two or more individuals. While the first movie saw the Joker influence the people of Gotham City to stand up, the title could hit at the possibilities of more than one Joker in the sequel.
Joker followed Arthur Fleck, a down and out comedian with a medical condition, who was thrown into the abyss by a rotting Gotham City in 1981. His rise as Joker happens after he decides to take matters into his own hands, deciding to get rid of the rot himself.
While Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his leading role in the movie, Joker’s cast also included Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Bill Camp, Shea Whigham and Marc Maron.
Though the movie received only mixed reviews from the critics, it went on to mint over $1 billion at the global box office, becoming the first R-Rated movie to do so. Joker is now available to rent on YouTube Movies.
