Raj B Shetty’s crime drama film Toby has finally made its way into the digital space. Directed by Basil Alchalakkal, the movie is available for streaming on SonyLIV from today (December 22). Released in the cinemas on August 25, the movie has garnered a lot of appreciation from the audience and critics alike, particularly for its lead actors’ performances.
Raj B Shetty starrer Toby’s plot
Toby revolves around an innocent man, named Toby (Raj), who is often hired as a ‘murderer’ by the village chief Ananda (Deepak Shetty). But when Ananda interferes with Toby’s foster daughter, Jenny (Chaitra J Achar), his inner beast awakens. Toby then embarks on a journey to break free from the evil world and transform himself for Jenny.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, the Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye star revealed that Toby ‘was his vision’. “I think the film Toby is Raj B Shetty’s vision, because when I read Dayanand’s story, it had this character which I envisioned as a movie. I saw a film that is independent of Dayanand’s short story, but the character and the set-up actually inspired me to see my cinematic vision,” he elaborated.

Raj also revealed that the film’s setting is derived from both the original story and the collaboration with his friend Balakrishna Arwankar. Being from Kumta (Karnataka), Balakrishna’s guidance was crucial in understanding the local nuances during the filmmaking process.
Raj expressed a keen interest in learning about the nature of the people and the distinct clothes they wear, which are notably more vibrant and brighter than those in Mangaluru. Notably, Dayanand lacks knowledge with this cultural context. Raj mentioned that every time he had a question about the place, he turned to Balakrishna to ensure if they were portraying the people accurately.
