What is To Kill a Tiger about?

To Kill a Tiger hauntingly showcases the prevalent victim-blaming mindset that has impregnated society to give birth to monsters that rape children. Director Pahuja worked 8 years on the documentary that follows the enduring fight put up by Ranjit, an impoverished farmer of Jharkhand, to get justice for his 13-year-old daughter Kiran.

Kiran had been raped by three men of her own village. Wracked by guilt at his inability to protect his child, Ranjit sets out on the warpath as an ordinary man. By seeking the legal route and going to court. But then his own village turns on him. What began as coaxing and cajoling them to come to an agreement with the perpetrators soon turn into full-blown death threats.

The documentary offers sharp editing and a sensitive approach to the matter by highlighting the hypocrisy of society in little words. By starkly contrasting the simplicity and turmoil of the young, innocent Kiran, with the deep-rooted misogyny and victim-blaming mindset of society, the documentary is a hard-hitting reminder of the people we live among.

It shows how easy it is for them to suggest unthinkable things like marrying off one’s abused daughter to their rapist or that she has received a deserving punishment for simply existing as a female. To Kill a Tiger will be mesmerizing yet tough to watch at times, but that impact is necessary to bring about change.
