Thuramukham, which is directed by Rajeev Ravi, has postponed its release date four times in the past three years
After postponing its release date multiple times in the past three years due to various reasons including the pandemic and financial issues, the makers of Nivin Pauly-starrer Thuramukham have finally locked in a release date for the movie, helmed by director Rajeev Ravi.
Thuramukham, which is scripted by Gopan Chidamabaran and is based on KM Chidambaram’s eponymous play, had wrapped up its shoot in 2019 and was scheduled to hit theatres first in April 2020. However, the pandemic lockdown forced the makers to push the movie’s release to a date after theatres in Kerala reopened. Since then, though, the team had announced several release dates and all of them were postponed due to financial issues of the producers and differences with the distributors.
Finally, producer Listin Stephen took up the film’s distribution rights last year and there were also reports that he was planning a November 2022 release. This too was pushed. Now, the team has finally locked in on a date – March 10, 2023.
The movie is based on the chappa system, which was prevalent in the Cochin port during the 1940s and 50s and the revolution of the workers that led to its abolishment. Nivin, Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, Poornima Indrajith, Darshana Rajendran, Nimisha Sajayan, Binu Pappu and Arjun Ashokan are part of the film, which has Sudev Nair essaying the main antagonist.
The period drama, which is also shot by the Kammatipaadam director Rajeev, will also have portions from the early 1900s and the story will span decades – showcasing the actors in various get-ups.
Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with OTTplay, Nivin told us that despite the movie’s release date being postponed several times, the audience is still eagerly awaiting its release. “Every time I share a poster of a new film, people comment, asking for an update on Thuramukham. So, the film is highly-anticipated,” said the actor.
