Thuramukham, which is a period film, has Nivin Pauly, Joju George and Nimisha Sajayan as part of its cast
After a delay of almost three years, Nivin Pauly and Indrajith Sukumaran’s much-anticipated period drama Thuramukham revolving around the working class in Cochin harbour is set to hit theatres on March 10. Now, we hear that the film’s OTT rights have also been picked up by a leading platform, which will begin streaming the film after its theatrical run.
Thuramukham, which has a host of actors in the lead including Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan, Darshana Rajendran, Sudev Nair, Arjun Ashokan and Poornima Indrajith, is a period drama set in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
The movie focuses on the inhuman chappa system that was practiced in the Cochin port where workers had to fight among themselves to retrieve a metal coin for the right to work. How this led to a protest by the proletarian force in 1953 and its aftermath, form the plot of the film, helmed by Rajeev Ravi and scripted by Gopan Chidambaran.
Thuramukham, which was set to hit theatres in April 2020, had to face several delays due to the pandemic as well as the financial struggles of its producers. The movie’s distribution was finally taken up by producer Listin Stephen last year.
In a recent interview with OTTplay, Rajeev, who is also its cinematographer, said, “It’s mounted on a big scale. Every day we used to have a minimum of 100 people on the sets. Also, the heat, the delay of three years – if you take all of that in account, Thuramukham has drained me out. It was also a film that required planning. It’s different from my previous as it’s a drama that involved huge crowds and was set against a varied landscape. It was an adventurous trip.”
Thuramukham’s OTT rights have been bagged by Sony LIV, which is expected to begin streaming the film on the platform from April, after its theatrical run. The movie will be available to stream on OTTplay Premium also.
