Three of Us X review - Shefali Shah-starrer is like a warm hug, full of realization and acceptance

Three of Us is a movie which is as much about remembering as it is about letting go. It features the talented likes of Shefali Shah, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Swanand Kirkire as the titular trio.

Directed by Avinash Arun, Three of Us had its OTT debut on December 29, 2023, giving a soothing send off to the year. It premiered theatrically on November 3 this year before arriving on Netflix. The film stars Shefali Shah, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Swanand Kirkire in the leading roles, and is a story based on a woman’s battle with dementia, with her rushing to recollect her childhood memories.

The film traces the tale of Shailaja, a woman who has recently been diagnosed with dementia and yearns to revisit her childhood before it recedes from her memories forever. Ironically, as she travels across the enthralling Konkan coastline, she is accompanied both by a slightly jealous husband and a partially wistful childhood lover, while Shailaja is figuring out the meaning of love, life, loss, and liberation.

With memorable performances from each actor, be it Kirkire essaying the understanding, subtle husband or Ahlawat posing as the smiling yet remorseful ex-lover, the film takes the viewer on a journey of remorse, recuperation, and reminiscence.

Three of Us did not really shake up the box office, with its modest first week collection being just over a crore. However, the film received mixed reviews both offline and online, with most calling it thought-provoking, while some found it too slow and simple for their liking.

There were a few on X, formerly Twitter, who thought the film was unable to hit the spot, with some also calling the film boring.

But the rest were all praises for the exceptional performances delivered by Shefali Shah and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Some X users even found the film reflective and relatable on a personal level, which was its intention, and made people treasure the little, simple things in life, which we often take for granted. One X user even compared the film’s nostalgia and tranquility to their childhood summer vacations spent at their grandmother’s home.
