Three of Us
Three of Us is not yet another movie which you can watch when you are bored at home. The Shefali Shah-led movie is an amazing cinematic experience that demands your full attention. The 2022 movie weaves a masterful spell by perfectly harmonising the art of storytelling, the power of phenomenal acting, and visuals filled with tranquillity. Three of Us can be called a rare gem in the landscape of contemporary Indian cinema that will definitely leave a lasting impression on you.
A journey back to a familiar place can stir up long-forgotten emotions. In the movie, Shailaja (Shefali Shah) has been diagnosed with an early stage of dementia. She has already begun to forget things, whether it's her own identity, her family, or even her work - everything is getting affected due to this recently diagnosed illness. Hence, before she forgets everything, Shailaja embarks on a trip to her hometown Vengurla with her husband. While revisiting the old places, her school, and meeting childhood friends after a staggering twenty-eight years, she longs for redemption.
Shailaja and her childhood love Pradeep (Jaideep Ahlawat) visit a fair in Vengurla, along with his child and her husband, just a day before they return to Mumbai. While riding the ferry wheels, Shailaja and Pradeep take a trip down memory lane and rekindle the past filled with both happy and sad parts. As Shailaja has forgotten many things, Pradeep reminds her about their last meeting, when he brought flowers for her, and she got mad because he didn't bring any for their other friends. Soon after hearing this, an emotional Shailaja apologises to Pradeep for not informing him and saying goodbye, before moving to another city.

The emotional core of Three of Us lies in its ability to evoke nostalgia. The cinematography has brilliantly taken the viewers on a poignant journey. Shailaja's quiet acceptance that she will be forgetting Pradeep soon, offers a profound lesson for us. It whispers a truth that runs counter to our relentless struggles in our daily lives. The movie points out that sometimes the truest path of healing is in the gentle act of pausing, turning back the pages of our memories, and allowing ourselves to be swept away by the tide of the past.
These revisiting of cherished moments can be in any form such as just simply returning to a place where once laughter echoed, or maybe a heartfelt reconnection with those whom we knew, or simply a quiet moment stolen from the daily life. In this process, we don't dwell on what's lost, but rather on the enduring strength and love that those memories hold.
These memories can work as a painkiller for the weary soul. So, take a deep breath and embrace the past as it sometimes helps to stabilize your present and future.
