September 30 this year, has quite a few big-ticket film releases, including Vikram Vedha, Ponniyin Selvan and back home, Kantara and Thothapuri. The Jaggesh-starrer, Thothapuri is a two-part film directed by Vijayaprasad, who has made Neerdose with the Navarasa Nayaka earlier. Vijayaprasad is fresh off the release of his last, Petromax, which fizzled away at the box office, and is eagerly looking forward to Thothapuri, which, he hopes, will appeal to those who liked Neerdose.

To be released in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi, Thothapuri also stars Aditi Prabhudeva, Dhananjaya, Veena Sundar, Hema Dutta, Suman Ranganathan, among others, in pivotal roles. The film, which has music by Anoop Seelin, is a satire, which, in typical Vijayaprasad style will be high on adult comedy. In fact, at the trailer launch of the film, chief guest Sudeep, who appeared to be enjoying the humour, had said that Jaggesh was the only Kannada actor who gets away with saying outrageous lines like the one in Thothapuri. Sudeep added, ““If I had said any of these lines that Jaggesh sir does in Thothapuri, that would have become major news. When you do, people just laugh. Honestly, I don’t know how you pull it off. I think it is also about the way those lines have been said that is making people laugh and not take objection to it. I would be trolled if I had said any of his lines. Also, imagine if I had a film called Thothapuri; I am sure we’d not sell even two tickets. I am sure even my wife and daughter wouldn’t come for such a film. But when it is a Jaggesh film called Thothapuri, it has a certain weightage. Some movie titles can be carried off only by certain filmmakers and actors.”

While the first instalment of the film opens in theatres in less than two weeks, we have now heard that producer KA Suresh has sold its satellite and digital rights to Zee Network. As such the film will start streaming on Zee5 Kannada after its theatrical run. No release date has been announced, but it can be safely assumed that the streamer would look at bringing the film to its platform within a month of its theatrical release. Even its most recent release, Vikrant Rona, came to Zee5 Kannada just over a month after its July 28 theatrical outing. The September 2 date was chosen to coincide with leading man Sudeep’s birthday. With Thothapuri, the film can be expected to drop by the end of October, or perhaps for Karnataka Rajyotsava on November 1.
