Before the era of Thammudu and Kushi, Pawan Kalyan dabbled with a handful of soft, lover-boy roles in films like Suswagatham, Gokulamlo Sita and Tholi Prema. In these films, you get to explore a lesser-known dimension of the star minus the isms with his innocence, casual charm and underplayed performances. Much to the joy of his fans, Tholi Prema is re-releasing in theatres after 25 years.
Sri Matha Creations is releasing the light-hearted romance drama in over 300 screens this June 30. Keerthi Reddy, Nagesh, Ali, Vasuki, Venu Madhav, Sangeetha played other key roles in the Karunakaran directorial bankrolled by GVG Raju under SSC Arts. Deva scored the music for the film which went onto win six Nandi awards and a national award as well in 1998.
Ahead of its re-release in the coming week, a new trailer of the blockbuster romance was launched amidst several dignitaries in the industry today. From Pawan Kalyan’s boy-next-door charm to Keerthi Reddy’s grace, Vasuki’s controlled performance, the emotions, music and the liberal doses of humour, Tholi Prema continues to be as refreshing as it was, two and a half decades ago.
Beyond the commercial elements, Tholi Prema is cherished for its simplicity, innocence and its understanding of interpersonal relationships. The film remains widely watched by viewers across all age groups whenever it is telecast on television. Disney+ Hotstar currently holds the OTT rights of the romance. Pawan Kalyan, Karunakaran later reunited for the actioner Balu later.
Anand Sai’s Taj Mahal set for the film attained popularity upon its release. The art director went onto marry Pawan Kalyan’s on-screen sister Vasuki and they’re now parents to a grown up son and a daughter. The actress returned to cinema after Tholi Prema with Nandini Reddy’s family entertainer Anni Manchi Sakunamule, where she played Santosh Soban’s elder sister.
