Kiran Rao’s latest directorial venture, Laapataa Ladies stars Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Sparsh Shrivastava
Kiran Rao is currently celebrating the success of her latest film Laapataa Ladies, starring Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel and Sparsh Shrivastava. The director recently spoke about her process of filmmaking and working with various directors. She also spoke about her son Azad and the reason she gave him this name.
Kiran on why she named her son Azad
During an interview with The Lallantop, journalist Saurabh Dwivedi asked why she named her son Azad and Kiran replied that it was her idea. She also stated that it is a lovely name and she has always loved what it stands for. In addition, she revealed that Aamir Khan's (her ex-husband and Azad’s father) great grand uncle was Maulana Azad, so the name brought that connection too. Kiran also quipped that she believed that a person ends up becoming their name.
Kiran on working with different directors
Kiran had assisted director Ashutosh Gowariker in his film Lagaan and director Mira Nair in her film Monsoon Wedding. When Saurabh asked about the difference she sees in Ashutosh, Mira and other contemporary director’s filmmaking, Kiran stated that every director has their own individual style. “Ashutosh gets deep into his process because he writes his own scripts. I worked with him on Swades also, he is very detail oriented. I have learned a lot from him,” she said
Kiran also added that directors who write their own scripts are very much involved in the process. She revealed that she had not written Laapataa Ladies but was very much involved in the writing process. Kiran added that she feels privileged to have worked with so many directors.
Kiran on casting Ravi Kishan
Speaking about actor Ravi Kishan’s character in the film Laapataa Ladies, Kiran said that he is underutilised in the industry. Kiran also revealed that Ravi Kishan says that he tried his best in the Hindi film industry but when nothing worked out, he formed his own Bhojpuri industry.
