The 3rd edition of FilmLight Color Awards, organised by FilmLight, the creator of the BaseLight color grading system, in partnership with Camerimage, was held on November 11 at the EnergaCamerimage Cinematography Film Festival in Toruń, Poland. From a pool of approximately 400 entries, the distinguished honorees were carefully selected by a jury presided over by Oscar-nominated cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, who presented the awards.

What did colorist Yvan Lucas share?

Barbie, which made history by being the first movie to collect billion-dollar this year, was honoured with Color Grading Award for its vividly bright colors in the whole movie. Yvan Lucas told The Hollywood Reporter, “Rodrigo Prieto (cinematographer of Barbie) and I both like to work together on the overall look of a film before production starts. Creating LUTs (Look Up Tables) that define the way color and contrast will be affected helps Rodrigo, the director and the department heads all work towards a common goal.”

“For the majority of Barbie, meaning all scenes set in Barbie Land, we created a LUT that combined an overall film emulation, a three-strip Technicolor look and specific ways of interpreting hues such as red, pink and blue in a way that pushes them into the palette everyone now recognizes from the film”, Lucas added.

Barbie star-cast

Barbie stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Mackey, Will Farrell, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, and John Cena. Directed by Greta Gerwig, it claims 2023's highest grossing movie with a collection of $1.36 billion, worldwide.
