As the trailer for The Trial finally premieres online today, the creator of the series, Suparn Varma, couldn't ask for a finer way to kick off his week. By doing so, he introduces Indian viewers to his version of The Good Wife a hit American drama. He thinks he's found the perfect actor in Kajol to bring the story to life.

Suparn told Mid Day that for many years, Kajol has been considered "India's sweetheart." She brings a crazy level of enthusiasm to the stage, and luckily, she does too.

Kajol will be stepping into the shoes of Julianna Margulies in the part she originated in the courtroom drama. Suparn had heard rumours about the actor's legendary spontaneity for years before finally witnessing it in her first web series.

They would have long conversations before shooting dramatic scenes, and she'd always ask him what she could do to improve the scene. He would take some time out of his own head to jot down a few lines for her. Suparn calls Kajol a generous performer who lives in the now. One can see her work in real time as she stages her scenes.

The filmmaker, who just had a hit with Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai claims that modern performers are eager to try new roles because of the internet. The writing is more nuanced, and the characters are more three-dimensional.

In The Good Wife Emmy winner Julianna Margulies stars as a mother and wife who bravely re-enters the workforce after her husband's incarceration following a highly publicised sex and political corruption scandal.

The Trial marks Kajol's debut in a long-format show; the actor had earlier made her OTT debut with Tribhanga streaming on Netflix. Her upcoming series also features Jissu Sengupta, Sheeba Chadda, and Kubbra Sait, among others, in pivotal roles. The premiere date for the Disney+ Hotstar series has yet to be announced.
