The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark’s trailer leads us back to young Tony Soprano

The Sopranos chronicled the tale of ruthless mobster and mafia head Tony Soprano, as he tries to balance between his family and the mob world. The immensely popular television show, The Sopranos is a landmark in the entertainment industry, as it marked a new beginning in terms of critical and commercial fame. Therefore, when the series ended after its six season-long-run in 2007, fans were left heartbroken.

But today there’s some good news for Sopranos lovers. A prequel of the show, titled The Many Saints of Newark, is in the works with its first trailer being released on Tuesday night. It will revolve around a young Tony Soprano, as he grows up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history – against the backdrop of the 1967 race riots. It will narrate the events that shaped his life and led to the birth of the feared mafia.

In the trailer, we see a young Tony floundering in school and being reprimanded by his mother Livia, but shining equally under the guidance of his uncle, Dickie Moltisanti, whom he idolises. We will also know how the influence of his impressionable uncle turned the young teenager into the steely mob boss. Remaining true to Sopranos tradition, the trailer hints at violent action sequences from punches to guns, and even a saw, as well as depicting the racial tensions prevalent at that time.

With a stellar cast in place, portraying Tony Soprano is James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, along with Vera Farmiga as Livia, Corey Stoll as Uncle Junior, Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti, Billy Magnussen as Paulie Gualtieri, John Magaro as Silvio Dante, and Jon Bernthal as Giovanni Soprano.

Written by David Chase and directed by Alan Taylor, the movie will hit the theatres in the US on October 1, followed by a digital release on HBO Max 31 days later.
