Three of the best action filmmakers are teaming up to remake the hit Indonesian action thriller The Raid. The 2011 film starred Iko Uwais and also spawned a sequel in 2014.

According to Deadline, Netflix has signed on for a new reimagining of Gareth Evans’ cult classic The Raid. Patrick Hughes will be directing the movie with Michael Bay. XYZ Films will produce the action drama. Evans will also executive produce it Range Media Partners. The script will be written by Hughes and James Beaufort.

The Indonesian film, which was renamed The Raid: Redemption for its release in the US, is written and directed by Evans. The film is about an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team that gets trapped in a building that is run by a ruthless drug lord and his army of killers and thugs. The film had premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2012 and opened to positive reviews by fans and critics alike. The film was especially appreciated for its action sequences and Evans became one of the festival’s biggest stars. The Sony film gained a cult fan base and spawned a sequel The Raid 2.

Hollywood has reportedly been trying to remake the film ever since and finally, it seems like it is happening. Sources told the portal that the makers have been in the works for a while now and they happen to finally get the rights recently for the reboot. Sources add that Bay and Hughes instantly hit off for the film as they are both into high-octane action drama. And Hughes reportedly has a new take on the story which excited everyone on board including Bay and Evans. Streaming giant Netflix too got on board as it was insistent to landing the package. The deal has reportedly been closed after a long negotiation.

The English film will be based in Philadelphia’s drug-infested 'Badlands', where an elite DEA task force enter to catch an elusive kingpin. The producers told the portal that they are excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. "It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre,” the producers said.

Meanwhile, Hughes is known for has action films like The Expendables 3, the box office hit The Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. He is currently working on the action comedy The Man From Toronto. The film stars Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson.
