Ryan Gosling’s filmography is a fascinating space for any actor to inhabit. The star, known for some tentpole movies, has also participated in stories that were nuanced, edgy, and rooted, and some that approached the medium with humour while maintaining logical consistency. While discussions around him often centre on Barbie La La Land, and the possibility of his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he also starred in a very fun movie called The Nice Guys. Partnered with Russell Crowe, this film should have garnered much more attention than it did. Despite this, loyal fans have been clamouring for a sequel for the longest time. However, it turns out we might never get one, at least not soon.
For the uninitiated, The Nice Guys is about two misfits who join forces as they are hired as private eyes to find a missing woman and investigate the mysterious death of a porn star. The movie begins with them at loggerheads, and it slowly develops into an intriguing narrative that is not just a thriller but an amalgamation of many elements. You could even call it a buddy comedy at one point. But it turns out Ryan Gosling has now dashed our hopes of seeing a sequel to this interesting movie. Read on to find out how and why.
The Nice Guys 2 Isn't Possible
Ryan Gosling is currently busy promoting The Fall Guy which hits the big screen this coming Friday. The actor was in a conversation with Comicbook when he was asked whether there would be a sequel to The Nice Guys. Gosling candidly explained the reality of why a sequel isn't possible at the moment. Emily Blunt, his co-star in The Fall Guy, mentioned that she recently watched the film on a flight to LA with her family, and they all loved it.

Explaining why there can never be a sequel, Ryan Gosling said, “So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds.” He added, “Angry Birds just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.” This means the box office was a decider, and The Nice Guys couldn't make it despite having good reviews by its side.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 grossed a total of $352.8 million worldwide. As for The Nice Guys, the movie that stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe was made on a budget of $50 million and could only bring in $59.5 million worldwide, which was a disappointment. The movie, however, received great reviews at the time. Even the Rotten Tomatoes scores stand at 91% from critics and 79% from the audience.
