The Matrix Resurrections
Lana and Lilly Wachowski have awed the audience for two decades with their sci-fi marvel The Matrix. Inspired loosely by the Japanese cult hit Ghost in the Shell and other sci-fi themes, the film changed the landscape of modern cinema and showed our reality may not be what we see. Now, after three films from the Matrix franchise, the fans are all enthused about the upcoming fourth instalment The Matrix 4 or The Matrix Resurrections. The latest film will have Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith reprising their roles. They will be joined by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Christina Ricci.
However, the new film will not have one of the Wachowski siblings to helm the project. Lilly has decided to step down as one of the directors of the movie. Lana's wish to get back to helm the project and Lilly's decision happened due to the death of their parents.
According to Men's Health, Lana said in an interview that she decided to return to help her cope with her immense loss. She said art helps console. But different people have different ways to cope with their losses. Lana's sibling Lilly had a different take. According to the portal, the filmmaker opened up during an interview for a panel on her series Work in Progress. Lilly said revisiting the storyline was emotionally draining and she needs some time away from the industry. “I needed to reconnect with myself as an artist and I did that by going back to school and painting and stuff,” Lilly was quoted as saying. The filmmaker further said that working on a dramedy about a queer woman, Work in Progress, proved to be the creative antidote to the stress she was facing with The Matrix 4. She, in fact, called it a 'super fulfilling' experience.
Lilly said Lana had come up with the idea for another Matrix movie. "We started talking about it in between our dad dying and our mom dying, which was like five weeks apart. And there was something about the idea of going backward and being a part of something that I had done before that was expressly unappealing and emotionally unfulfilling. And I didn't want to do that," she added.
Meanwhile, Matrix 4 will release on December 22, 2021.
