The film is set to be a Netflix original release later this year.
The trailer for The Lost Daughter has been dropped by Netflix. Based on the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante, the psychological drama marks the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal. Featuring Olivia Colman in the lead role, the film follows her character Leda who is on a seaside vacation. There she becomes consumed with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and daughter as she watches them on the beach.
She is unnerved by their compelling relationship, their raucous and menacing extended family, Leda is overwhelmed by her memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood. The trailer also shows how an impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her mind. She is then forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences.
The Lost Daughter also features Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Paul Mescal and Ed Harris in supporting roles.
Netflix has described the premise of the upcoming film as "A woman's quiet seaside vacation takes an unsettling turn when her fixation on a young mother staying at a nearby villa awakens memories from her past."
Osnat Handelsman-Keren, Talia Kleinhendler and Charles Dorfman have produced the film. The Lost Daughter was premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival. At the event, Maggie was bestowed with Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay.
The film is set to have a limited theatrical release in December and soon after it will stream on Netflix from December 31, 2021.
This is the first time Maggie has helmed a full-fledged feature film. Earlier, she has produced the 2018 release The Kindergarten Teacher and turned into an executive producer for Best Summer Ever which hit the screens in 2020.
