The Last Of Season 2 ft. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is up for release sometime in 2025, and the makers are now discussing the future.
The way the world of The Last Of Us has grown on us beyond the games is exceptional, and all the credit goes to the amazing creators of the live-action show: Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, joined by the stellar Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The show, which aired on Max in the West and Disney+ Hotstar in India, has been one of the most successful IPs in recent years. As the makers move towards the second season, the biggest question is where the story will go from here and how it will be divided into seasons. Mazin, who has recently opened up, has revealed quite a bit about the future seasons while keeping the major details under wraps. Here’s what we know.
The Last Of Us Season 2 is currently in production, bringing back Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, and Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother. The season is slated to release in 2025, and fans are eagerly awaiting every update. In a recent conversation with Deadline, creator Craig Mazin revealed that the story of Part II of The Last Of Us game is so extensive that it will require more seasons to tell it properly. He even mentioned that the episode count for Season 2 will be fewer than the nine episodes in Season 1.
Craig Mazin stated that the story material in Part II of the game is much more extensive than that of the first game. The challenge was figuring out how to tell this story across multiple seasons. He found a suitable breakpoint in Episode 7 of Season 2, which means Season 2 will have seven episodes. "We don't think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons [2 and 3] because we're taking our time and going down interesting pathways, which we did a little bit in Season 1 too," Mazin said.
"We feel like it's almost assuredly going to be the case that—as long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television—Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4." He added, "One thing is absolutely for sure, I don't see how we could tell the story that remains after Season 2 is complete in one more season."
While the wait for The Last Of Us Season 2 is getting tougher, with 2025 seeming too far away, Craig Mazin further teased in the interview that, while the season is based on the second game, it will feature some unseen stories. "As a fan, I'm thrilled that there might be a third 'Last of Us' game," Mazin said.
"As the co-creator of this television show, there's no world where I would want our show to go beyond the source material that people have in the world. Our show, as people know it on HBO, is going to cover the material from the second game and then quite a bit of material that is relevant to that story but, as I said, wanders down interesting new paths, unseen stories that were told within the context of that game's material," he added.
The wait just got a lot more difficult. There is no release date attached to The Last Of Us Season 2 yet. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else in the world of streaming and films.
