The Kashmir Files director Vivek Agnihotri was asked if he would donate the earnings of the film. Agnihotri said that the makers will take a decision after the profits come in.

Comedian Kunal Kamra reposted this clip of Agnihotri and wrote, “Desh ke liye jaan dene ke liye ready hai par desh ke logo ko paise dene ke liye nahi (sic).”

Here is his tweet:

His tweet translates to “They are ready to lay down their lives for the country but reluctant to share the money with their countrymen.”

The comedian's comment did not go down well with a section of Twitter users, who derided him for calling out Agnihotri.

Read their reactions here:

Previously, Agnihotri had objected to the film being tax-free across mostly BJP-led states. He had also criticised IAS officer Niyaz Khan’s suggestion to donate the film’s earnings to charity.

The Kashmir Files which stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi and Mithun Chakraborty, is about the Kashmiri Pandit exodus of 1990. The film, though one of the highest grossers, has invited criticism for its subject.

In New Zealand, the chief censor had raised a concern that film may incite anti-Muslim sentiment and its rating was re-reviewed from R16 to R18 (for adults only), according to NZ Herald.

“The subject is important and yet you cannot put a finger on why this movie tries too hard to show you the horrors instead of touching your heart,” wrote Manisha Lakhe in her review for OTTplay.

The Kashmir Files is now playing in theatres.
