The Omitted Death From The Iron Claw

Some films just make you relive tragedies in a way that not many can. These are real-life stories, portraying the hardships and lives lived by real people on the big screen. The impact they leave on you is sometimes much more intense than any fictional tale that is equally moving. One such movie in recent times in the West was The Iron Claw. Quintessentially a film that tells the tale of four strong men, beneath that layer is a story about the demons they fought, their shortcomings, and one of them succumbing to the struggle. Kerry Von Erich, played by Jeremy Allen White, meets a very tragic fate, leaving the audience shattered when it was released on the big screen. But did you know another tragedy doomed the Von Erichs but was omitted from the film?

The Von Erich Brother That Did Not Make It To The Film

The family of wrestlers, the Von Erichs, take center stage in The Iron Claw. The film follows the lives of the four brothers played by Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Maxwell Jacob Friedman. While it covers the tragic deaths of Kerry and David, played by White, it ignores the death of Chris. There is a reason why they did so, and Sean Durkin even revealed it once. Read on to know everything you should about the same.

Enjoy 35+ OTTs like ZEE5, LionsgatePlay, Ullu, SunNXT, SonyLIV, Fancode and 250+ Live TV channels at just ₹99.

For the uninitiated, there is a conspiracy theory called the Von Erich Family Curse that explores the deaths of the brothers after their father dreamt of building a legacy. Chris, the brother who also died, was not mentioned in the movie. He took his own life in September 1991. According to Vulture, writer-director Sean Durkin once spoke about omitting Chris’s story from The Iron Claw, calling it the hardest decision he had to make.

"The movie just couldn't withstand another brother's death. It's hard to say this from a human level, but from a narrative and character standpoint, there's a repetition that's just hard to take. Mike, Kerry, and Chris all suffered similar fates: They took a gun or a bottle of pills into a field on their ranch and killed themselves overnight. I don't want to say it was stopping the movie from happening, but if I'm honest, it was. It took me a year to write it and take him out," Sean said.
