Doug Liman’s film has Matt Damon and Casey Affleck team up to steal from a dirty politician, but then, their heist goes awry, with law enforcement and criminals hot on their heels
A little while ago, the trailer of the upcoming action comedy heist thriller The Instigators dropped and with that came a release date. The film by Doug Liman, starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in the lead, is coming to Apple TV+ on August 9.
The Instigators has Damon as Rory, an ex marine with massive financial burdens, including mortgage and back child support, who teams up with ex con Cobby (Affleck) to steal money from the mayor at the party on election night. They do manage to get the job done, but then they have the cops and the corrupt politico’s men hot on their trail. “Everybody in New England is after us,” says Rory. The official synopsis adds, “Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture — or worse.”
The Instigators, written by Chuck Maclean and Affleck, also stars Hong Chau, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. The film is set to get a limited theatrical outing in the US on August 9, with a world-wide OTT release on Apple TV+ a week later.
Meanwhile, the streamer’s upcoming content slate is looking better by the day. This week, the first two episodes of Presumed Innocent, starring Jake Gyllenhaal dropped. Later in the month there’s Eva Longoria’s Land of Women (June 26), Lily Gladstone’s Fancy Dance (June 28), WondLa (June 28), Sunny (July 10), Me (July 12), Lady in the Lake (July 19), Time Bandits (July 24), Women in Blue (July 31, Bad Monkey (August 14), among others.
