Despite the mixed reviews, 'The Exorcist: Believer' grossed over $130 million globally to emerge as a commercial success.
What is 'The Exorcist: Believer' about?
Billed as a sequel to William Friedkin's cult classic, 'The Exorcist: Believer' follows the plight of photographer Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) who must confront the nadir of evil after his 13-year-old daughter Angela and her friend Katherine are found possessed. Much like in the original, the demonic possession poses a bizarre, perplexing threat to Victor and the community around him until he finds the memoir written by Chris MacNeil, who experienced something very similar with her daughter Regan back in 1973. With the two girls' lives now on the line and an exorcism being the only way to save them, Victor and others must now seek every drastic solution in their attempt to ward off the ultimate evil.
Sixth instalment of 'The Exorcist' franchise
Although the release of Friedkin's original film in 1973 was followed by a lot of controversies owing to some of its sequences and the overall sacrilegious subject matter, its eventual critical and cult success triggered a big set of sequels to form 'The Exorcist' franchise. Exorcist II: The Heretic, directed by the legendary John Boorman, released in 1977 but the film did not attract the same kind of praise and love that the previous one did.

Following this, William Peter Blatty, the author who wrote the source novel The Exorcist, chose to direct the third instalment, or The Exorcist III, in 1990 to positive results but it wasn't until 2004 that a new iteration of prequels came about. While Exorcist: The Beginning, directed by Renny Harlin, served as one kind of a prequel to 'The Exorcist', legendary screenwriter Paul Schrader ('Taxi Driver', 'Raging Bull', 'First Reformed') helmed an alternative prequel titled 'Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist' the following year. While the former did decent business at the box office, Schrader's film failed to yield good results despite receiving praise from William Peter Blatty himself.
