Produced by Riya Mukherjee, The Disguise is a short film starring Naomi Willow, Adriana Grigoriev, Zed Josef, and Jennifer Scott Malden in prominent roles. It was the official selection for the Accolade Global Film Competition, South Asian Short Film Festival, BZN International Film Festival, and many more.

The film is set in London and follows two women, Rabia and Lena. Fate brings them to the same bus stop that acts as a metaphor for what alters their lives from there. They both assimilate into the western world in different ways. Rabia chooses to wear her burqa and accepts the unwelcoming glances and actions as part of her life. While Lena, on the other hand, does not wear a burqa at first. The incident that changes the course of the film also changes both the women’s perspective on identity and the choices they have made.

The film takes a bold step in the right direction and urges us to start a conversation about Islamophobia. We have read and heard of hate crimes and racial intolerance and this film deals with the issue quite tactfully. One could also say the film is not only about intolerance towards the Muslim community but also about intolerance at large and the freedom to choose how one wishes to express their sense of cultural and religious belonging.

The Disguise is a commentary on racial stereotyping and prejudices that exist in our society. It also beautifully depicts the hurt and loneliness that one feels when alienated by those around them, merely because of their identity. The short film also tackles the personal conflict both these women go through while making life-altering transitions in the journey of finding themselves.

This incredible film will leave you asking, “Is the society we live in really as tolerant as we think it is?”
