Amanda Seyfried has come on board for the latest series from Apple TV+, titled The Crowded Room. The Academy Award-nominated actress will play the female lead in the series, opposite Tom Holland.

The upcoming series will take the form of a seasonal anthology, telling inspiring stories of people who have battled with mental illnesses, but managed to successfully live their lives, despite their struggles. The first season will revolve around the story of a man named Danny Sullivan, played by Holland. Seyfried will star as a clinical psychologist, named Rya, who, despite the challenges she faces as a single mother, tries to put the needs of her patients above her own. In the midst of it all, she is faced with one of the toughest cases of her career.

The series will be based on Daniel Keyes’ biography The Minds of Billy Milligan. The 1981 non-fiction book revolves around the story of Milligan, a person with Dissociative Identity Disorder. He had become the first person in the US history to be acquitted of a crime by pleading his disorder as a defence.

Academy Award-winning scriptwriter Akiva Goldsman has created the series, which is said to also be based on Goldsman’s own life. The filmmaker, popular for his work on films such as A Beautiful Mind (2001), The Da Vinci Code (2006) and Angels & Demons (2009), will also executive produce the show under his banner of Weed Road Productions. Holland also acts as an executive producer on the show. Kornel Mundruczo will direct episodes of the show’s first season.
