Hemanth M Rao has said it multiple times that Sapta Sagaradaache Ello is a story he first wrote more than a decade ago. In the time since, it has had multiple variations and today, looking back, the filmmaker is glad that he did not make it as his first film, as the final version is a lot more mature and poetic than it was initially. The idea to make SSE a two-part film, says Hemanth, came to him during one such rewrite, but he did not give it much thought at the time.

It was only when he began putting the screenplay together with his co-writer that Hemanth became sure of this trajectory for the narrative.” When we began shooting, I had a bound script (including screenplay) for Side A, while for Side B only the story was ready. During a schedule in Shivamogga I broached the subject of making SSE a two-part film with Rakshit. One thing that we were sure was that this is not a story where you can release one part now and then bring the next after six months or one year. This is a story where the second part has to come while you are still on the emotional hangover of the first. There is a certain emotional high that we want to keep audiences in. Rakshit said that we should shoot both parts and that I should take a final call at the editing table.”

SSE Side A is set to release in theatres on September 1 and while Hemanth has not revealed much about the story other than that it is an intense love story, he has now added that his characters will not be seen professing their love for each other. Instead, his aim has been to make audiences feel the love. “When you make a film, your attempt is to bring audiences into the world you have created and that has to be realistic. Love story is an intimate thing that happens between two people. It’s a personal space and the closer you bring it to audiences, the more effective it is. There is a visceral experience to a romance, where you feel what the characters feel. In my film they never say I love you, but as audiences you will feel their love,” says Hemanth.
