Thank You For Coming – a sex comedy film directed by Karan Boolani and produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor – premiered at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) recently. Slated to hit the theatres on October 6, the movie stars Bhumi Pednekar, Shehnaaz Gill, Kusha Kapila, Dolly Singh and Shibani Bedi. Speaking in a recent interview, the director said that he is not in favour of the tag ‘chick flick’ being used for female-led films as he finds the term derogatory.

Karan Boolani’s views on ‘chick flicks’

While speaking to The Indian Express Karan said that these so-called ‘chick flicks’ promise the audience a good time and a feeling of falling in love, but he finds the term derogatory. Addressing the tag attached to his wife, producer Rhea Kapoor’s last film, Veere Di Wedding, Karan said that it is just a tag, and you can even call it a ‘friendship film’.

‘Sonam Kapoor opened up the rom-com genre in India’

According to Karan, his sister-in-law, actress Sonam Kapoor has a huge role to play in introducing the rom-com genre in Indian cinema. Sonam was a part of Rhea’s earlier projects such as Aisha, Khoobsurat and even Veere Di Wedding. Karan revealed that he sees so many girls approaching Rhea telling her how much they love Aisha and that it is their favourite film.

Adding to that, Karan said that he finds it amusing how ‘guy films’ don’t face the same treatment. “There we don’t talk about this stuff. Why? There is a guy who has a girlfriend, he drinks with his buddies and challenges his father every step of the way and that’s fine. It doesn’t have a tag,” he said.

Thank You For Coming will be released under the banner of Balaji Telefilms Limited and Anil Kapoor Film Communication Network Pvt. Ltd.
