It remains to be seen whether Thalapathy Vijay's Leo will break the collection records of director Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1 at the Tamil Nadu box office.
Thalapathy Vijay's Leo is expected to set the box office on fire after its release. But, the movie is already making its head turn by generating record-breaking pre-theatrical revenue.
According to reports, the sale of the theatrical rights of Leo has fetched more than Rs 100 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. It has already surpassed the pre-release revenue of Vijay's previous blockbusters. For example, the theatrical rights of Master were sold at Rs 83 crore in Tamil Nadu. Despite the pandemic and its early OTT release, the movie managed to make profits for its investors.

In the current condition, when there is a revived interest in big-star movies at the box office, Leo will easily shatter the records of all previous blockbusters.
However, it remains to be seen whether it will break the collection records of director Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1 at the Tamil Nadu box office. Last year, the first part of the epic drama created history by earning Rs 200 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Even Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer failed to beat the record by earning Rs 185 crore. But, Leo is likely to surpass the collection of PS 1, considering it is part of a movie franchise, Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU).
What's LCU?
LCU began with Kaithi in 2019, which followed the efforts of a newly released prisoner to save the top police officers of Chennai City from the members of a drug cartel. Karthi played the lead role in the movie, which made Lokesh Kanagaraj a force to reckon with in the film industry. Lokesh expanded that cinematic universe with Vikram, which itself was a spin-off from Kamal's 1986 action drama of the same name.

Leo is due in cinemas on October 19.
