Thalaivii: Kangana Ranaut talks about the importance of falling in love with the character she plays

The upcoming multilingual biographical film will trace the life of the actress-turned-politician and one of the most popular former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa.

Kangana Ranaut, who has been delivering several hits after hits, is now all set to wait and see the fate of her upcoming biopic Thalaivii. The film of the Bollywood star, who has multiple accolades to her name, will release in theatres this Friday. It chronicles the life of Tamil Nadu’s former chief minister, the late J. Jayalalithaa.

In talks with Film Companion, the Padma Shri Award winner talked about what went in prepping for filling the shoes of the beloved late actress-turned-politician on screen. Calling it a personal process which she would not recommend, the actress said a character’s psychology is important for her. She stressed on how she tries to figure out their weak points and darkest desires in addition to the dominant traits in their personality. And, loving a character at times, even more than yourself, is also a huge part of the process. She finds it uncomfortable sometimes, considering the spiritual person that she is. The ‘deep and dangerous’ love for a character is what cinches it, she said.

She said she finds the reward for the tremendous efforts that she puts into a character in portraying larger than life characters, such as in Thalaivii and that forms the gratifying part of her job.

The upcoming multilingual film will not be the first time Ranaut has stepped in to play a real-life person in a film, having previously donned the role of the queen Rani Lakshmibai.
