The latest instalment of the long-running horror-slasher franchise, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is headed to Netflix. The streaming giant has bought exclusive streaming rights from Legendary Pictures. The upcoming film will pick up from where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic left off.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s lead character Leatherface is among the top villains in the horror genre. The upcoming movie will be the ninth film in the franchise and is set right after the gory events of the original film. While not much is known about the plot of the film, it is understood that Leatherface will return as the antagonist.
The original 1974 film introduced Leatherface, a member of a family of cannibals with a deformed face. His face is hidden with a mask, made out of the skin of his victims. While the original is considered one of the most influential horror movies of all time, Leatherface has been a constant in many of the other sequels and prequels.
The film is directed by David Blue Garcia and is written by Chris Thomas Devlin. The story for the slasher film was developed by Fede Alvarez, who has directed movies like Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe. Texas Chainsaw Massacre stars Elsie Fisher, Sarah Yarkin, Jacob Latimore, and Moe Dunford.
While Netflix has confirmed the news, an official release date has not yet been announced.
