Telugu film director Surya Kiran passes away in Chennai

Director and actor Surya Kiran, a popular face in the Telugu film industry, passed away in Chennai today

Actor and director Surya Kiran, a popular name in the Telugu film industry, passed away in Chennai on March 11. The 51-year-old director, who was undergoing treatment for jaundice, succumbed to the illness. He had been admitted to GEM Hospital in Chennai for treatment. The director of Satyam had also participated in Bigg Boss Telugu season 4.

PRO Suresh announced the director's passing on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday, writing, “Director Surya Kiran has passed away due to jaundice. He directed telugu films, Satyam, Raju Bhai and a few others. He was also a former contestant on Bigg Boss Telugu. Om Shanti (sic)."

Beginning as a child artist

Born in Kerala, Surya Kiran’s family was from Thiruvananthapuram. Surya Kiran began his career as a child artist in Malayalam film Snehikkan Oru Pennu (1978) in which he was credited as ‘Master Suresh’. The young actor went on to star in several films including Kadal Meengal, Mangamma Sabadham, Manithan, Swayam Krushi and Khaidi No 786 and so on.

Directorial debut

He made his directorial debut with the Telugu romantic comedy Satyam which had Sumanth and Genelia D'Souza as leading stars. The film was a massive success and ran in theatres for more than 150 days. The director then went on to helm several other films including Brahmastram, Raju Bhai and Chapter 6. He later appeared on the fourth edition of Bigg Boss Telugu in 2020 but he was eliminated after a week.

The director had earlier revealed that he was planning to make a comeback in 2017, only for the film to be stuck in pre-production. His last directorial Arasi, featuring Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, is ready to hit the screens. The film is

Surya Kiran’s family

Surya Kiran was briefly married to actor Kalyani, who is best known for her role in Malayalam film Guru. The couple parted ways, a few years later. His sister Sujitha Dhanush is also a well-known face in the South television industry who has appeared in several Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu serials.
