Dinakar Thoogudeepa, the younger brother of Challenging Star Darshan Thoogudeepa, who has made his mark as a filmmaker with movies like Navagraha, Saarathi and Life Jothe Ondu Selfie, returns to the director’s chair with the upcoming thriller Royal, starring Viraat (of Kiss fame) and Sanjana Anand in the lead.

The film is slated to be in theatres on November 22, in the run-up to which, Dinakar has begun releasing songs, with the latest being an energetic dance number featuring the lead pair. While the song, Tang Tang, may initially seem like a romantic number, it later emerges that it is part of some competition the duo partakes. Royal is a Charanraj musical with Tang Tang featuring the vocals of singer Anurag Kulkarni. Choreography is by Jani master and has Viraat and Sanjana busting quite a few hook steps.

Royal is Dinakar’s first directorial since Life Jothe Ondu Selfie. The filmmaker had announced a film called Sarvantaryaami, starring Darshan, but for reasons best known to the brothers, it did not take off. At the time, there were rumours of mild tensions between Darshan and Dinakar, but that’s all water under the bridge.

Dinakar has been seen visiting Darshan, who is currently in jail as an accused in a murder case. In fact, during the Tang Tang song launch, the filmmaker said that he was not in the right mental state to attend such events, but turned up nevertheless, because of his commitment to producers Jayanna and Bhogendra, who trusted him and invested on the film.

The film, which Dinakar describes as a pucca commercial entertainer with action, love, drama, etc. also stars Raghu Mukherjee, Chaya Singh, Achyuth Kumar, Rangayana Raghu, Pramod Shetty, Ravi Bhat and Gopalkrishna Deshpande in pivotal roles. Before he began work on Royal, Dinakar had announced a film with Puneeth Rajkumar, which did not happen because of the latter’s tragic and untimely passing. The filmmaker has clarified that he has not reworked the script meant for Puneeth for Viraat.
