Switch {case n, a Kannada film by a techie, about the issues faced by people in the IT industry, came to theatres just over a month ago. The film, directed by Chetan Kumar and led by Agnisakshi fame Vijay Suriya is on OTT now, but as has been the case off late, it is on a TVOD (transactional video on demand) basis only. Switch {case n dropped on Amazon Prime Video late on June 28, but is in the store on rental only. The film is available at Rs 349 rental.

All about Switch {case n

Director Chetan Kumar drew from personal experiences to present a tale of an IT professional, as he navigates pressures of deadlines, office politics, etc. in his pursuit of recognition. The film also stars Shwetha Vijaykumar, Raja Balwadi, Santhosh Karki and a host of newcomers.

In an earlier conversation with OTTplay, Shachina Heggar, the founder of Flat Curve Studio, a content aggregator for OTTs, had said that rentals will be the future for most cinema, which, in turn will be the true measure of how many people actually watch Kannada cinema. Switch {n case’s Rs 349, though, is quite steep, considering that most Kannada films go in the Rs 99-Rs 149 range on the store.

Only early access rates for star films go as high as Rs 349. Given that Kannada audiences are averse to paying for content, TVOD does not work, as demonstrated recently by director Pawan Kumar, whose Dhoomam got 19L views once it was made available for free on YouTube, after months on Apple and Google’s TVOD. Switch {n case, meanwhile, has already found its way on to major piracy channels.

New Kannada movies on OTT released this week

Meanwhile, Vijay, who plays the lead in the Telugu series Krishnamma Kalipindi Iddarini, changed his name to Vijay Lalitaa Suriya, incorporating his mother’s name also, as a way to express his gratitude to her.
